Period of Turkish occupation
1517 – Turkish occupation. Riots among the Jews of Hebron.
1520 – A group of Jews deported from Spain immigrates to Hebron under the leadership of Rabbi Malkiel Ashkenazi and buys the land of the “Jewish Quarter”.
1540 – Construction of the “Avraham Avinu” synagogue.
1583 – Kabbalists from Safed, including the “First Wisdom” – R. Eliyahu di Vidash, immigrate to Hebron.
1630 – Decrees on the Hebron community. The miracle of saving the Jews of Hebron called – “Purim of a Window”.
1750 – R. Gershon Makitov, brother-in-law of Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism, lived in Hebron.
1753 – The Hida – Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai leaves as an emissary to Europe on behalf of the Hebron community.
1811 – Rabbi Chaim Yeshua Bajao (“Egyptian Life”) buys the lands of Tel Hebron for the community.
1819 – The Middle Rebbe of Chabad calls on his followers to settle Hebron. Hebron – “The capital of Chabad in the Holy Land”.
1834 – An earthquake. The Egyptian conquest led by Ibrahim Pasha. Riots among Jews.
1839 – The Jewish-British Minister Sir Moshe Montefiore and his Jewish wife visit Hebron and enter a building above the Cave of the Patriarchs.
1856 – The Rabbi – R. Eliyahu Mani – immigrates from Baghdad and settles in Hebron.
1870 – Rabbi Yosef Chaim, the “son of a living man”, visits Hebron.
1876 - Israel’s Avraham Romano from Istanbul builds the Romano House – the “Istanbul Synagogue”.
1881 – Harif – Rabbi Chaim Rahamim Yosef Franco Av Beit Din of Hebron.
1893 – Construction of the ground floor of the Chesed La Avraham clinic.
1901 – Rabbi Chaim Hezekiah Medini – the “Sdei Hemed” – immigrates to Hebron and is appointed rabbi of the city.
1909 – Gavir Yosef Avraham Shalom builds another floor in Beit Chesed La Avraham – Hadassah.
1912 – The first Hadassah clinic in the country is operated at Beit Hadassah, providing medical assistance to all residents of the city – Jews and Arabs.
1912 – Rebbe Shalom Bar of Chabad buys the Romano House and founds the Torat Emet yeshiva.
1914 – World War I breaks out. The Jewish community in Hebron is being harmed and depleted. The “Torat Emet” yeshiva closes.
