Avraham Avinu Synagogue

The neighborhood which houses the old Jewish quarter of Hebron was established roughly 1,000 years ago. The central feature is the Avraham Avinu Synagogue, built in 1540 by Jews from Spain. In 1929, a horrific Jihadist massacre took place in Hebron, leaving 67 Jews dead and many maimed. The British, who controlled the area at the time, failed to protect the community and banished them from the city following the riots.

In 1948, Jordan occupied Hebron and destroyed the quarter, turning the synagogue into a garbage dump and sheep sty. After the liberation of Hebron in 1967, initiatives to reinstate Jewish life in Hebron began. The ruins of the Avraham Avinu Synagogue were uncovered in 1976 and the synagogue was rebuilt in 1981. In 1989, a part of the Jewish Quarter was rebuilt and the ancient neighborhood was reestablished.
